How to Play Different Variations of Rummy Games

Rummy games have become immensely popular throughout the world over the years and the same is true in India. People in India love the game for its nostalgic appeal, the simple rules, and of course, the opportunity to enjoy playing it with their friends and family members, particularly at festivals, celebrations, and gatherings. Yet, there are diverse variations of these games that are now available for players online. Here is a closer look at some of them and their basic gameplay aspects.

Multiple Variations of Rummy Games and Their Core Aspects

Here are some rummy variations that you need to know about:

  • Indian Rummy- This is the classic version that you will mostly find online these days. Players get 13 cards each, with the rule being creating sequences and sets before the rival to win. A deck of 52 cards is selected for a game between two players, while this goes up to two decks of 52 cards for a game involving six players. Players completing sets will have to declare in order to win (it has to be valid).
  • Points Rummy- One of the most exciting rummy games available for enthusiasts, it is essentially a version of Indian rummy where you have to play for points. The rupee variant is pre-decided and the player who wins declares and gets a score of 0. The losing players have to calculate the points that remain in no-sets and the scores are added to their tally. The winner gets the money depending on the total points of the rivals.
  • Deals Rummy- Another version of the 13-card Indian rummy game, it offers a fixed number of cards for every player. At the beginning, there is a fixed amount of chips, while at the completion of rounds, winners can get chips from losing rivals, depending on the score. At the end of the game, the one with the higher number of chips will emerge victorious.
  • Pool Rummy- Pool rummy is played until the final player gets more than 101 or 201 points in total. The player who wins each round will have 0 points. This version takes slightly longer in comparison to other variants of rummy games
  • 21 Card Rummy- This variant adheres to the same regulations as almost all other rummy versions. Yet, the only point of difference is that 21 cards are given to each individual player and they have to create a minimum of three pure sequences. Thus, it is a slightly tougher version for you to play, unless you have adequate skills and experience. There is also a system of penalties, where 30 points are attached to those dropping out without playing any hand and 75 points is the penalty for dropping out after playing. There are also lower and upper jokers in the game.
  • Gin Rummy- In this version, players get 10 cards each with the A card being taken as the first card before 2 and 3. You can win without getting a full set of valid cards if the point value is lower than 10. This is done by knocking for the victory.

These are some of the versions that you will commonly find on online platforms and mobile apps. Compare between them closely before choosing the one that suits your preferences and skill-sets.
