SHEA (Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness) training course is intended for staff members in the utilities sector who require access to locations. Created by Energy & Utility Skills, the course is for health and safety awareness within various sectors such as gas, power, water, and telecommunication.
The training offers a minimum level of knowledge to anyone who works in settings where environmental and safety risks need to be controlled. It’s not limited to technical or engineering personnel—contractors, visitors, drivers and support workers who are required to access premises will typically be required to possess an active SHEA card. The training is typically an essential condition of site access and is accepted by utility companies and contractors throughout the UK.
What the Course Covers
A SHEA training course provides an introduction to the main health, safety and environmental matters that are applicable to utility work. It covers modules in the identification of hazards, reading risk assessments, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency response. Environmental protection, manual handling, work at height, and the avoidance of underground and overhead services are also covered in the course.
Each iteration of the SHEA course is specific to a particular utility sector, such as SHEA Gas, SHEA Water, or SHEA Power. Although most core subjects remain constant, sector-specific components concentrate on sector-specific risks and conditions in which the delegate will be operating. This makes the training directly applicable to the type of operation the delegate will be performing.
The course is interactive, with classroom-style teaching supported by discussions and case studies. It’s optimized to be accessible to a broad audience of learners, and no experience or qualification is needed beforehand. There is a multiple-choice test at the end to ensure understanding.
Who Needs to Take It and Why
SHEA training is for anyone who must work on or access utility areas, either on the highway, construction sites, substations or off-road facilities. Employers frequently send new employees or contractors to take the course prior to beginning work. Some use it as refresher training for veteran employees as well.
The course facilitates a common understanding of safety process and expectations between mixed teams. It minimizes the risk of accidents and makes all on site realize their own responsibilities—not merely to themselves, but to those around them.
Upon completion of the course, the learner is awarded with a SHEA card, which remains valid for five years. The card is also often linked with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), granting entry to construction sites where a CSCS card is necessary, subject to the individual’s eligibility.
