The trichomes on your cannabis plants are made up of two common types: bulbous and capitate. Bulbous trichomes are the smallest, measuring about 40-50 microns across. Capitate sessile trichomes are larger and more abundant, taking on the familiar head-and-stalk shape. The most common type of trichome is the capitate-stalked type, which ranges from 50 to 100 microns wide. These are composed of two separate components: a waxy gland head and a basal cell.


In cannabis plants, sessile trichomes are preferred over stalked trichomes, because they produce high yields. The difference between the two trichome types is the number of cells per cell, and these cells are located on the same plant part. Despite the similarities, the two are significantly different in terms of the types of substances they produce. Sessile trichomes are generally better for yields because they are more compact, and the production process becomes more efficient.


Bulbous trichomes are often overlooked as a major contributing factor to high yields in marijuana cultivation. Using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 25.0, we estimated the distributions of fluorescence ratios and droplet diameters in trichomes from three strains of marijuana. We determined that trichomes with high numbers of cells were most likely to produce high-quality yields.

Understanding how these unique structures contribute to high-quality yields is essential to expanding the spectrum of cost-effective cannabis cultivation.
