4 Tips for Mastering Event Production

event production

Have you always been the one who wanted to plan all of the events? In high school, you worked in the theatre department and worked behind the scenes at the talent shows. In college, you wanted to intern at the local music venues. You’re the main party planner for your friend group, or at least you are in your head.

Does any of this sound familiar?

A career in event production might be for you. Why not take the skills from your head to the eyes of audiences?

Producing successful events is fun and fulfilling for the right people. Keep reading for 4 of our favorite tips for mastering event production.

1. Don’t Neglect Visuals

It’s easy to get caught up in the technical aspects of your event or to get lost in the planning. There’s so much to do and so little time and you know the ins and outs of how to make things run without a hitch behind the scenes.

Remember the audience, though. The best special events production experts know that audiences and clients value aesthetics when it comes to their events, and you’re being hired to entertain them.

While you need to balance everything, make sure that the main show looks great above all else.

2. Hire the Right Crew

You’re only as good as the people you hire, so make sure that you get it right.

It’s easy to look at credentials and hire based on experience and competency. This isn’t always the best choice, though.

While you should look for experience and skill, you also need to make sure that your crew has the right attitude for the job at hand. You need problem solvers and flexible go-getters, not “rock stars” who want to do things their own way without a willingness to change.

3. Know the Venue

Not all venues are going to be suitable for all of the things that you want to do with your event. A tiny space may not go well with an excessive light show and smoke machines while a large space might not suit a simple presentation without extra screens for the people in the back.

Before you start, make sure you and the planner are on the same page about your limitations.

4. Keep the Magic Alive

Part of producing a good event is making sure that it doesn’t look produced. It looks natural and smooth. Your audience has no idea what’s going on behind the scenes, and they shouldn’t.

Try to keep any projectors or light stands out of the eyes of the audience. Tuck away any cords or machinery. Don’t forget to do a run-through first to make sure that the event looks seamless.

Is Event Production the Path for You?

Producing successful events isn’t easy, but if you’re the type of person that loves to bring plans to the stage, event production might be for you.

Why not try your hand at it? Start small and see what you can do. A career in event production might be on the horizon.
