Is the story true?
Of course, the afterlife part of this movie is purely fiction, but the other half of the movie is somewhat true, as described by the author herself. The author, who goes by the name Alice Sebold told that the story of her book was somewhere based on a real rape story of a girl. The girl was pretty much young when she was not only raped but murdered as well. This particular incident happened back in the 1970s, and it happened in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
The author said that while crafting this book, she put herself in that girl’s position and started to try and look after her life from the afterworld herself. This part is very moving and upon getting to know this, the audience will be able to better understand the meaning and the story of the entire movie. One will have a better understanding of this movie which is pretty much important in order to make the movie feel real. Another depressing fact was that the author herself in the year 1981 was raped, but she was strong and determined, and she came out and narrated her story in the form of her brilliant book.
Injustice has been constant on women for ages; women are considered to be the submissive gender in society. And then comes the evil in the form of rapists and murders who exploit the surroundings and society. This movie teaches one a great lesson as they show how Susie, the protagonist, even after her death tries to fight for justice and tries to find a way to punish her murderer.
